Two-part Dive Control Specialist Program

The new East Coast Divers Dive Control Specialist Program is broken down into two parts.

The first part consists of classroom training which covers:

  • The dive control specialist and their roll in diving
  • Diving Physics
  • Diving Physiology
  • Decompression theory
  • Computer theory
  • Equipment
  • The Aquatic Environment.

The second portion of the course encompasses all the waterman ship and co-teaching skills including:

  • Group Management
  • Leading dives
  • Assisting in classes and open water dives
  • Teaching snorkeling
  • Teaching refreshers
  • Learning about Scuba Rangers

If you are interested in learning theory for personal knowledge (without working with students) you may take part one of the program only. It will not give you a certification, but knowledge is it's own reward. If you complete both parts 1 and 2, you will become certified as a Dive Control Specialist. Once certified you may:

  • Teach the Scuba Skills Update Program
  • Teach snorkel diving and issue Snorkel Diver certifications
  • Give underwater tours to certified divers
  • Assist certified SSI instructors in classroom, pool, and open water training
  • Teach classroom and pool under direct supervision
  • Act as a dive master for certified divers
  • Take students on underwater tours
  • Assist students into and out of the water

Prerequisites to start part one:

  • Be a certified diver with 40 logged open water dives
  • Be at least 18 years of age

Prerequisites to start part two:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have at least 40 open water dives logged
  • Provide your own equipment of leadership quality
  • Have a current medical exam for diving
